Loading Events

Join professional artist Kerry Newell for a pastel workshop at Martin Mere.

Kerry’s workshops cater for all artistic abilities even if you feel you have none. Beginner or more advanced, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at just how much can be achieved in one day.

Plan for the day

  • On arrival all attendees will be given a welcome sheet introducing them to Kerry, the medium to be used and briefly covering the techniques and some arty terminology too.
  • Introduction to the day’s subject and materials; e.g. paper, paints & brushes etc. Including a brief explanation on how the medium works and advice on how to make the most of the day.
  • Best methods for preparing the painting or drawing surface.
  • Different methods for transferring a sketch.
  • Beginning the painting/drawing.
  • Covering composition, contrast, tonal values, shades, and more.
  • Understanding colour using the colour wheel for reference.
  • Watercolour workshops include working wet on wet, wet on dry techniques, the importance of lost and found edges & negative painting.
  • During the day there will be plenty of time for questions, something that Kerry actively encourages.
  • There will also be a break for lunch, a little time to relax with your packed lunch or enjoy something in the Martin Mere restaurant.
  • Kerry usually ends the day with advice on how individuals can take their craft a step further, how best to utilise the supplies they already have, and suggestions for additional supplies.
  • Beginners are welcomed and all participants are encouraged to suggest ideas for future workshops.
