36 Hours

in West Lancashire

Spend a wonderful 36 hours in beautiful West Lancashire by using our weekend guide below for some inspiration of what to see and do in Ormskirk and the surrounding area.

Start your morning at one of West Lancashire’s finest Tudor buildings, the National Trust’s Rufford Old Hall which was built in the 1530’s. Be amazed by the Tudor Great Hall and its beautiful furniture, suits of armour and carved oak screen, a rare survivor from the 1500’s. See portraits of the Hesketh family’s 400 year residency and explore the grounds featuring late-Victorian styled gardens, topiary an orchard and a woodland walk. (£)

End your morning with a quick visit to Burscough Wharf, alongside the Leeds Liverpool canal showcasing a range of food and drink for lunchtime, along with arts, crafts and fashion too.

Whilst in Burscough you could take an afternoon leisurely canal boat trip, or if you’re with young children then they may want to check out nearby Windmill Animal farm instead.

Finish off the afternoon with a visit to the Chapel Gallery to see the latest exhibit, and maybe purchase a masterpiece of your own. Plus don’t forget to visit Ormskirk Market (on Thursdays & Saturdays) and try some of the famous Ormskirk Gingerbread!

For a Romantic evening

Spend a romantic evening at Moor Hall.
Set within five acres of beautiful gardens this fine dining restaurant will serve you with a feast of the very best Lancashire produce, grown and reared within miles of the hall. Chef Patron Mark helped guide the team at Cumbria’s L’Enclume to five AA Rosettes and two Michelin stars so expect great things from this West Lancashire restaurant.

For a Family evening

With a host of family friendly restaurants you’ll be spoilt for choice! There are a range of restaurants that offer locally sourced produce and half portions for children. Alternatively there are also centrally located places in Burscough & Ormskirk that offer dedicated children’s menus too.
See our Food & Drink Section for inspiration.
After eating why not try the nearby Rose and Studio Theatre at Edge Hill University? Choose from a variety of comedy, dance, drama, literature, music, film, live theatre screenings, and family-friendly shows.

Have a leisurely morning stroll around one of West Lancashire’s areas of natural beauty or one of our Guided Walks then regain some energy with a delicious Sunday lunch at one of the fabulous pubs featured in our Food & Drink section.

Finish the weekend with a visit to WWT Martin Mere Wetland Nature Reserve and see more than 100 types of rare and endangered water-birds. Get up-close to feed them or watch from the comfort of one of the many hides. If you’re feeling adventurous during Spring & Summer (April until the end of October) you can take a canoe safari through the wetland landscape. In the winter months see the award winning swan feed at 3pm (until March) or join a wardens talk.
Children can undertake craft, follow the discovery trail, make dens or play at the Rushes play centre too! (££)
